Moving home?
Moving Home Checklist
We’ll make sure the power is on
Moving house? It happens to us all at some point.
Most people find moving to a new house to be stressful, but with a bit of preparation, it doesn’t have to be stressful at all.
Sign-up with GloBird, give us as much notice as you can, and we’ll get the power on at your new place. Need it done ASAP? Give us a call on 133 456 and we’ll do our best to make it happen as fast as possible.
Below is a simple checklist – mostly things you can organise before the big day, to help things go smoothly when the removalists roll up.

1.
Get yourself a removalist.
Sometimes moving yourself may be the best option … but if not, find yourself a reputable removalist. For moves in Melbourne and surrounds we recommend our mates at Friendly Moving Men.

2.
Declutter & cull
Start packing before the big day rolls around. This as an opportunity to declutter your home. We all accrue so much stuff – but do we really need it? Gather boxes from your local supermarket, or you can purchase them from storage companies. When you donate to an op shop, you’re helping the community and giving your stuff a second life.

3.
Connect / Disconnect utilities & services
Sounds simple right? This is the bit most people forget. You need to get the power, gas, internet and phone CONNECTED at your new home in time for your move. You’ll also need to DISCONNECT the power at your old place once you’ve cleaned and shut the door for the last time. Give us a call at GloBird before moving day and we’ll be sure to have the power on when you arrive at your new digs. Remember connections and disconnections aren’t instant, and in some cases can even take a few days. Also consider access to things like the meter box.

4.
Label your boxes
Maybe it’s not very PC to assign labels post 2000’s – but sometimes it’s so useful. Try packing room by room and labelling your boxes to match. This way your removalist can offload the boxes into appropriate rooms making the unpacking job that little bit easier.

5.
Call a cleaner
Weren’t blessed with the cleaning gene? That’s ok we’ve got better things to do too. However, if you’re moving out of a rental property it’s a good idea to leave the place as spotless as possible (if you want to get your bond back).

6.
Forward It
Did you know you can go to your local post office with your ID and pay for a mail forwarding service. That way you can still get parcels or important letters. This can help you remember who you’ve forgotten to update your address with. Or you can leave some prepaid addressed envelopes with the new tenant and ask them to bundle your mail and send on to your new address.
That’s it in a nutshell! Depending on your particular circumstances there may be a lot more people you need to alert about your move – but not everyone needs to know on the day of the move. It’s a good idea to have Australia Post redirect your mail whilst you figure out who else you need to inform.
